5 Topics the GOP Should Be Talking About (Or What Would Jesus Really Do?)

Tired of hearing the GOP talk about fake issues like gay marriage, birth control and religion in schools, when we have real problems to contend with?

Me too.

If all the GOP candidates claim to be Christian, shouldn’t they follow Christ’s example and care about the “meek,” instead of tax cuts for the very rich?

I’m liberal atheist (obviously), but I borrow Gandhi’s quote when it comes to describing my stance on Christianity:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

How in the hell (pun intended) does the religious right reconcile its political ideology with Jesus’ teachings? The cognitive dissonance is impressive.

What the GOP should really be asking is: What would Jesus do? And what would he be talking about in 2012?

5. Getting Rid of Tax Loop Holes for the Very Rich

Watch out! Be on your guard against  all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. [Luke 12.15.]

4. Promoting International Diplomacy (Not Military Action)

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [Matthew 5:9]

Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [Matthew 5:39]  I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you; [Matthew 5:44]

3. Promoting Tolerance (Not Discrimination and Bigotry)

If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to cast a stone at her. [John 8:7]

Do not judge, lest you too be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. [Matthew 7:1 & 2.]

2. Poverty in America

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed,
because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. [Luke 14:13 &14.]

Truly, I say unto you, it will  be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
[Matthew 19:23]

1. World Hunger

In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus proclaims that how you treat the hungry, the thirsty, the sick and other “least of these,” is how you treat Jesus himself.

Wait. Maybe I’m talking to the wrong party.  By their abhorrent social policies of intolerance, idolization of the institutions of money, and warmongering, I think Santorum, Romney and Gingrich might not be actual Christians at all.

Hear hear. It puzzles me that a political party claiming to pride itself on Christianity shows so little sign of being interested in the principles of the one they claim to follow.
